Emergency Ultrasonography

Donation of a portable ultrasound machine to the Emergency Department, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Location: Kumasi, Ghana. 2019

Bedside ultrasound is invaluable in emergency medicine as it can aid in the rapid diagnosis of an undifferentiated patient (i.e. patients in whom a diagnosis is unknown and who may need urgent, life-saving interventions). It is also cheap and useful in settings where access to other imaging modalities such as x-rays or CT scans may not be easily accessible to patients. MKF is grateful to our generous partners for their support in making the project successful. Below is a note from the Head of Department at KATH, Dr. Maxwell Osei-Ampofo:

“In low-resource settings such as Ghana where most radiological investigations are not readily available, point of care ultrasound helps enormously in the differentiation and resuscitation of acutely ill and injured patients. The Butterfly ultrasound donated to us through this foundation will thus contribute significantly to the prevention of deaths and disabilities. The Emergency Medicine Directorate is very grateful for this kind gesture.”
